The Iliad calls Achilles' psychic state following the slaying of Patroclus 'oulomenos'; i.e., an 'utter rage' similar to the berserker state.
It is heroic because it is so beyond the everyday human as to be godlike.
One sees in Synge's play, _Playboy of the Western World_ that 'oloumenos' there is also revered and the young maidens line up in their shifts (nightgowns) for the hero.
